Hanover Interfaith Cheryl Watson Memorial Free Clinic
at Shady Grove UMC
It began as an idea. It became the mission of many.
Shady Grove United Methodist Church hosts the Cheryl Watson Memorial Free Clinic, part of a consortium of Hanover County free clinics that provide medical, dental, and vision care to uninsured and underinsured patients. We provide primary care to eligible adults ages 18–64, partner with Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center for X-rays and other tests and refer patients for eye care and to Access Now for specialty care. Volunteers operate the clinic and generously give their time to serve people in need. We currently offer services on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month and expect to expand as Medicaid expansion services continue to be reduced.
To qualify for services, applicants complete prescreening followed by a full screening. We do not serve people who have medical insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. Patients must have household income below 250% of the federal poverty guidelines.
We can use your skills in various ways!
- Are you a Doctor/Nurse Practitioner/ Physician Assistant? – We need additional physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants as we expand. We are also considering offering OB/GYN services for our patients.
- We use 2-3 nurses/clinic night – We need additional nurses to assist clinicians.
- Lab Techs – These volunteers draw and collect laboratory samples for shipment to the hospital.
- Welcome/Sign-in/Appointment setters – These volunteers check in patients and direct them to the waiting area, screening, or a nurse for vital signs. They also contact late patients to confirm whether they are coming and schedule patients’ follow-up appointments.
- We need at least 2 screeners to verify that patients meet the requirements to see clinicians and receive services. Every patient must be screened annually to confirm continued eligibility.
- Many patients need costly medications. Our pharmacist works with drug companies to obtain them at no or low cost.
- Administrative staff – Our behind-the-scenes volunteers perform many tasks from making reminder calls and preparing the clinic the day of clinic, conduct prescreening interviews by phone, complete referral paperwork, and compile state-required
