LOCAL MISSIONS

Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Fund

Shady Grove United Methodist Church  is one of the original churches in the Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Fund (MCEF) organization and continues to participate in three ways.  SGUMC is the host site for the children’s clothes closet.  SGUMC donates a portion of the food collected from the congregation to the MCEF food pantry.  SGUMC makes a financial donation to MCEF to help local families who are experiencing a medical or financial emergency. Volunteers are needed.  Please contact Lynn Spinner at dandlspinner@verizon.net for more information.

Cross Over Ministry

Cross Over Ministry provides health services and clinics for the poorer areas of the Richmond community. The SGUMC congregation, provides volunteer hours to run the clinic several Saturdays a year and makes a financial donation.  Volunteer medical, clerical and bilingual people are needed.  Please contact Cindy Lee at 746-9073 or cindylee@shadygroveumc.org for more information.

Cheryl H. Watson Interfaith Free Medical Clinic

Eight to nine thousand of our Hanover neighbors currently have no health insurance and are not covered by Medicare.  Most of those live in Mechanicsville.  The Missions Ministry Team is working with St. James the Less Episcopal Church's Free Clinic to support a satellite clinic at Shady Grove. Please contact Beth Marie Helmbrecht at revhelmbrechtbmr@aol.com or contact David Whitehurst at dkwhitehurst@comcast.net if you would like to participate in this mission.

CARITAS

Shady Grove United Methodist Church  has participated in the CARITAS program for about 15 years.  CARITAS is the largest emergency shelter program in our community and focuses  on transitioning single adults and families from homelessness to independence by helping them find jobs and shelter. SGUMC volunteers range in ages from 5 years to 75+.  Please contact Jeff Cox at jandicox5@comcast.net. for more information.

Disciples In Action

The purpose of this group is to provide a meaningful way to serve God by serving those in need.  Disciples in Action aims to train, equip, inspire, and mobilize members to live out their faith as disciples through service to our local community.  Disciples In Action meets the second Saturday of each month.  Project information and sign-up sheets are located on the bulletin board directly across from the elevator on the first floor.  Please contact Kim Farnsworth at kfarnsworth@hanover.k12.va.us for more information.
